Making wire wrapped jewelry is definitely my number one love, but yarn crafts are very close to my heart. In this article; “Crochet for Beginners” we’ll discuss some of the basics that got me going with this inexpensive yet FUN hobby.

At the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, I found myself in the mood to expand my crochet skills. I wanted to improve my techniques and also explore more yarn related crafts. My biggest interest was learning Tunisian Crochet (a hybrid of crochet & knitting) and Amigurumi (the art of crocheting stuffed toys).

Crochet for Beginners – Basic Supplies

As I would recommend with any craft, I kept to the basic inexpensive supplies while first looking into this hobby. Here are the initial things I invested in….

Crochet for Beginners – First Steps

Blueprint  is a great and affordable resource for crafters to start out. Especially if you’re like me and have a variety of interests. I worked on doing a hat and a headband (pictured above) by BHooked Crochet on Blueprint which was a really great introduction to the craft.

I found YouTube to be one of my favorite go-to resources as well. It’s free but you will have to do a little digging to find instructors who truly seem to know their stuff. BHooked Crochet is again… one of my favorites. She has a great mix of videos on Crochet, Tunisian Crochet, & Knitting. Also, TL Yarn Crafts does a lot of Tunisian Crochet and product reviews. Her stuff is absolutely beautiful. HappyBerryCrochet is another good one. Especially, for stuffed toys (Amigurumi) and home decor.

Books are always a great investment. I had planned to buy a couple on the subject but never ended up following through unfortunately. At least for the Tunisian Crochet aspect of this post.

Crochet – Practical and Affordable

In closing, I’d like to highlight how practical and affordable the Crochet craft and hobby is. It opens up a whole new world of opportunities. I’ve now been able to make clothing, clothing accessories, stuffed animals, fake plants, gifts, home decorations, and more. It’s so nice to be able to enjoy a hobby while hand crafting items that are actually useful, fun, and visually pleasing. All the while leaving nothing really to waste.
